Condition of Howrah Maidan-Santragachhi Metro Corridor

In 2016 , the State Government of West Bengal proposed to extend the Indigenously-built 16 km East West Metro Corridor from Howrah Maidan to Santragachhi . Though the previously proposed Central Park - Haldiram/Airport northward extension of East West Metro got a well appreciation from Railways , this 10 km westward extension out of which 2.4 km will be underground and 7.6 km will be elevated , is still suspended from the list .

This ₹2500 crore metro extension is quite significant for both Indian Railways and West Bengal , as it will be serving 4 terminal stations of Indian Railways in Kolkata , namely Sealdah , Howrah , Shalimar and Satragachhi .

The Violet line represents the proposed extension , whereas the red line represents under construction EW Metro

The line has to be constructed , if not now then later on , as the two terminal railway stations of Santragachhi and Shalimar will be integrated to have world class facilities , more or less like modern airports (Click here to view Bengali News Article) to support all trains to and from Middle and South India . The excessive amount of passengers arriving and departing , which one can foresee from now , will be managed by this metro network . Moreover , it will act as a connector among all 4 terminal stations and the Airport , joining 2 important zones of Indian Railways ---- Eastern and South Eastern Railway.

Sorry , I don't have English versions of them. Pardon .

The stations aren't yet finalised , but these places have high possibilities of getting stations -------> Foreshore Road , Coal Depot , Shalimar , Nabanna , Belepole , Bakshara , Santragachhi and Santragachhi Bus Terminus.

A coach maintenance depot has been also planned  . They have planned two alternatives for depot --------

1. Near Padmapukur Waterworks , where KMDA and HMC has two contiguous plots of about 25 hectares .

2. Mourigram Jola , where state and SER has two contiguous plots of about 21.5 hectares.

NOTE :- The locations shown may not be same as original . They are just to give you an idea of the locations .

Just after the proposal , RITES was given the responsibility to prepare a Detailed Project Report of the Metro Extension .

Some newspapers claimed that construction would start early or late in 2017 . Unfortunately , this is out of question!

Railways have denied to construct the line all alone . As per new Metrorail construction rules and regulations (or Acts) , the State Government has to bear 50% of the total cost . Or else the project will be scrapped !

Till now , there is no sign of commitment from State Government , which makes the project uncertain . But I believe the project has to be executed as the area will be jam-packed with cars and overcrowded with passengers who will be arriving at Santragachhi and Shalimar stations . A metro is the best way to manage the system properly .

Anyways , a good news for you ! RITES has almost finished the drawings of Central Park - Haldiram Metro Extension . Tenders may be invited late in 2017 ! And work will start 3 to 4 months after tenders gets finalised ! So cheers !
