Aiming towards More Ridership , East West Metro to Serve Airport !

Aiming towards better ridership , KMRCL finalises that the 5.5 km Central Park - Haldiram stretch of the 16 km East West Metro to be extended upto Airport instead of terminating it at Haldiram !

This step by KMRCL makes East West Metro a Semi-Airport Express Line for Kolkata ! In 2016 , a 5.5 km northward extension of EW Corridor starting from Central Park to Haldiram was proposed. Meanwhile , a survey was done by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economical Service) , and it was found that Extending East West Metro Upto Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Int'l Airport will increase the ridership upto 2 Lac More ! The 32 km New Garia - Airport Metro will only benifit the people from East Kolkata , South Kolkata and North Kolkata , whereas the Central Park - Airport extension of EW Corridor will not only benifit Kolkatans , but will also help people of Western Side of Hooghly River to easily move on to the Airport . Similarly , people from Bongaon or Hasnabad will also be able to go to Howrah Station / Sealdah Station / Shalimar Station / Satragachhi Station . Here is a video by 24 Ghanta News Channel , mentioning the news report

Many forums on Kolkata Metro had discussions regarding why Metro Construction of Line 6 has not yet started beyond City Centre 2 . This was because KMRCL gave RITES to conduct a study on the possibilities .

The plan is , New Garia-Airport metro will terminate at Haldiram , whereas EW metro will be taken forward towards Airport , where it will allow its passengers to Interchange to 18 Km Noapara - Barasat Line 4 . EW metro will be elevated upto Haldiram , beyond which it will run underground upto Airport .

This clears another Hurdle For Line 6 ! As 70% of pier erection work is complete throughout the entire stretch , the line can be inaugurated even before its deadline ! This will give Kolkata its first fully elevated Metro Line .

Construction work for the Central Park - Haldiram Stretch will only start after the inauguration of 8.9 km Sector 5 - Sealdah stretch .
